I often get asked the question, how do you stay motivated? People say, I know what to do but I just don’t know how to get started. It certainly helps to go through a life changing experience- and on national television no less! But even though I’m driven and motivated, there are days that I just want to slack off…
Here are the 3 things I keep in mind to counteract that motivational dip:
1. Community- Surround yourself with like-minded people who share the same goals as you. After I got back from the Biggest Loser, I started training with Brian Nunez, who introduced me to this whole community of people committed to health and wellness- which I had never really been exposed to before. And I attribute a lot of my success in maintaining a healthy lifestyle to this new found community. I’ve met some incredible people and made some amazing friends along the way. It was because of this community that the thought of an Ironman was even possible. In my preparation for the big race, I now spend 5 days a week building my strength and endurance at the FNS Training Center .
2. Visualize It- If you don’t know what you want, you won’t get it. I’m a visual person so I like to be reminded of the different things I want to achieve. Every January, I create a vision board of things I want to work on or accomplish during the year. Take a look!
After all that hard work, I make sure my vision board is placed in an area where I’ll see it at least twice a day! I’m an “out of sight, out of mind” type of person so it’s important for me to have those reminders.
3. Set Goals- Now that you have a community to lean on for support and a vision of what you want to achieve, it’s time to put a plan of action together. You won’t get to where you want to be without knowing how to get there. The prospect of finishing an Ironman was daunting but I had made a commitment and now it was time to devise a plan. Fortunately for me, someone in our group had put together a nice little training plan, so all I needed to do was follow it! See how having a community came in handy? Haha! For my other goals that I’ve set, I created a playbook of how I would go about tackling those goals with set check points every month. You won’t know you’re on track if you don’t check in periodically.
The 3 above + Gym-Pact is a recipe for success!
Keep up the good work!
